Welcome to a short tour of the Cotton
Shredder-Bedder System. It is quickly becoming the preferred choice among the next
generation of cotton and vegetable growers, and here's why:
|
Centuries ago at the dawn of agriculture,
crops were planted on raised beds in thick virgin topsoil. Compaction was
limited to footpaths between the rows.
|
 |
The invention of the plow, drawn by oxen or
horse, accelerated soil erosion by turning under good topsoil to wind and water erosion.
More wheel traffic began the tendency toward soil compaction and loss of precious
topsoil.
|
 |
While today's implements save time and labor,
they leave their wide footprints on the earth. Wheel traffic severely compacts the
soil in many farming areas and the topsoil has been reduced to only a few inches in depth.
Crop yields suffer because roots are restricted by this compaction. It is
necessary to establish wheel traffic lanes to support these heavy implements. Crops
should be grown between the lanes where root systems can expand.
|
 |
The conventional cotton grower's fall tillage
methods include multiple field operations such as:
|
- numerous discings
- plowing
- ripping or chiseling
- bedding up
|
Each pass over the field
compounds the problem
and makes root and water penetration difficult. Criss-cross tillage stunts plant
growth and reduces cotton yields.
